When you need an org chart fast
Org charts go stale quickly. Someone leaves, a team reorgs, a new VP joins — and suddenly the version in your wiki is three months out of date. Rebuilding it from a template takes longer than anyone wants to spend on it.
flow-chart.io generates a fresh org chart from a description in seconds. Describe the current structure — names, titles, reporting lines — and get an editable chart you can export into your document immediately. When things change next month, update the description and regenerate.
What flow-chart.io generates for org charts
- Hierarchical tree layout — top-level role at the apex, direct reports beneath, automatically sized and spaced
- Name and title labels — each node shows the person's name and role title as separate lines
- Department groupings — color-coded or bordered groups for Engineering, Product, Design, Sales, etc.
- Dotted-line reporting relationships — secondary reporting lines drawn as dashed connectors
- Vacant position nodes — mark open headcount as unfilled roles in the chart
How to generate an org chart
- Sign up free — 5 diagrams, no credit card required.
- Select the Org Chart domain in the diagram type picker.
- Describe your structure — e.g. "Engineering org: CTO → VP Platform (3 squads: Infrastructure, Data, Security) + VP Product Eng (4 squads: Core, Mobile, API, Growth), each squad has a lead and 3–4 engineers."
- Edit and export — click any node to update names or titles; export as SVG, PNG, or JSON to embed in your handbook or slide deck.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I include both names and titles?
- Yes. Each node supports a primary label (name) and a secondary label (title or role). Just include both in your description — the AI formats them as a two-line node automatically.
- How do I show a matrix or dotted-line relationship?
- Describe the secondary reporting relationship explicitly — e.g. "the Security lead has a dotted-line report to the CISO." The AI renders it as a dashed connector between the relevant nodes.
- Can I show open or vacant positions?
- Yes. Include "open headcount" or "vacant" in your description for any position and the AI renders it as a placeholder node, distinct from filled roles.
- What's the best way to keep the org chart current?
- Export the JSON after each update. When the organization changes, reimport the JSON and edit directly in the node editor, or describe the change as a follow-up prompt.
